Matt, even more deeply the whole replaceable razor blade market is a scam. The benefits disposable safety razors provide over traditional double edge razors is debatable. The double edge razor's replaceable blades cost 10 cents and shave better, the only disadvantage, there is a slight learning curve. The environmental impact of safety razors is also significantly higher compared to double razors.

Razor blade cartridges lose their hone after a couple of weeks of use, but then stay pretty much the same sharpness indefinitely (it's still razor sharp, just not honed). How did razor companies convince people to keep buying new cartridges when one can last for years (and that's without any of the sharpening techniques that are available on the web)?

I don't get it. Whatever floats your boat though. I'm on my third cartridge in a bit over 6 years and will keep on using it until it breaks like the previous two did (one after 4 1/2 years, one after 6 months).

"This is an overpriced product with known excess profits, so much so that selling low-margin razor blades so you can sell high-margin razors in the aftermarket is now a business strategy cliche."

Is this correct or is the other way around, selling low-margin razors to then sell high margin razor-blades?
