thanks matt. i did enjoy having the blurbs in the email- i could read it all in mail as a single unit, easily scanning/digging into each one. now it has to be compelling enough to click and change contexts
Miralax is NOT a poor substitute for GoLytely, by any stretch of the imagination. I've been getting colonoscopies every 3-5 years since my mid-40s. My last two used the Miralax & Gatorade prep, with 4 Dulcolax tabs to start. The Miralax prep was much less uncomfortable than the Golytely prep.
It tasted a lot better, too, because I got to pick my favorite flavor Gatorade. The flavor packs for Golytely suck.
Google designed Android to allow side-loading, which means our phones can load apps from anywhere. The Google Play store is a convenience, not a must, unlike those inside the Apple jail.
The issue should be one of ownership. If I buy a cellphone or tablet, I should have total control over what goes in it. GM has no say on what gasoline you put in your car. Mead has no say on what you write in a notebook. Samsung has no say over what TV program you watch. Why should Apple have any say over what game you play on your phone?
If you don't like apple's or google's app stores, don't buy an iphone or android phone. There are going to be lots of phones and OSs to chose from in the future, already happening. Take heart and listen to Princess Leia, "The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."
Chavez sounds like he's doing a lot of flag waving to gain favor. Although, the type of thinking that says "I won't interfere with private business" is Libertarian not Democratic. Not interfering with businesses that are monopolies isn't democratic or republican thinking it's just bad for business. I would like to see how he would handle a monopoly on something essential--like say toilet paper where it became unaffordable for most people and even politicians to use. But, alas, I already know. Politician would have paper. Just like they do now...
Comparing Apple & Google Play margins to Visa/MC fees is a false comparison. A fairer comparison is retail margin (retail price - COGs). A 30% retail margin is reasonable. For example, retailers earn 60%+ on categories such as soft drinks.
Matt, your latest Apple apps piece is good written. Why not throw a bunch of BIG pieces together and put out another book? So little to do, you may be able to delegate the labor to a book packager or editor of your publisher.
Hi Matt, did you see the article in Ars Technica https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/03/demand-for-fee-to-use-password-app-lastpass-sparks-backlash/ about Elliott Management and Francisco Partners buying LogMeIn, and by extension, Last Pass? This is another “choke-point” ploy by private equity to find, buy, and then ruthlessly exploit trapped users who have become dependent upon previously-free or reasonably-priced SAAS options that are hard to replace. Call ‘em out! Another failed instance of the “error cost analysis” lie in action.
I've written before that the app store (and its attendant apps), as well as OS, email etc are actually the razor with the hardware as the razor blade - under the Gillette model.
Thus Apple charging app developers for its razor - which locks in users to buy new iPhones - is even more egregious than "normal" monopolization.
Matt, your work is fascinating and important, and I experience a genuine “oh boy!” reaction when your newsletter pops up in my inbox. You really need to hire a proofreader - the errors too often make key sentences impossible to decipher. “Just today, the Arizona House of Representatives passed a bill, 31-29, barring the use app store monopolies to take large fees from app makers”. I think I know what that means but... not really. I truly appreciate your enthusiasm for your work and getting it out there, but making sure your sentences say what you intend is a real service to your audience. Thanks for your heroic commitment to this crucial topic.

Love the newsletter. You make lots of errors though which make it hard to read sometimes. For $50 per newsletter, I’ll edit it for you. Let me know.

I just finished reading your book Goliath great information on the history of our downfall and greed of some people.
I believe in Love, Truth, and what is left is art LTA.
We need the truth before we can heal and move on. Viet Nam was a lie, 9-11 is a lie, we need the truth so we can heal as a nation and move on.

It is pure greed.
GoLytely... Probably the most inappropriately named product ever.
Speaking of cybersecurity vulnerabilities, not sure if you saw this story the other day - yet another private equity owned company likely dealing with a ransomware attack: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/03/payroll-hr-giant-prismhr-hit-by-ransomware/

I just wrote to my lawmakers in MN asking for them to support the legislation you mentioned. Thanks for keeping us informed!
